with two felonies. the gunman, 23-year-old paul ciancia killed hernandez. two additional agents were wounded. joining me now from austin texas is the chairman of the house homeland committee michael mccaul. congressman, thank you for joining us. in the aftermath of this, the question i hear most often is -- >> thank you. >> -- why did he do this? do you know about that? i know you've been able to see some notes that he wrote. what do you think the motivation was here? >> i think mental illness, once again, kind of like the navy yard shooter that we saw. the suicide note that i read talks a lot about killing tsa agents, and if he said if i just kill one my mission is accomplished and unfortunately, he did do that the other day and the other thing he wanted to talk about is how easy it is to bring a gun into an airport and do something just like he did and my simple thoughs go out to the hernandez family and the other victims, this tragic day. he's the first tsa agent officer to be killed in the line of duty. >> congressman, it's our understanding that much of the literature he had on

, people are mourning the death of tsa officer hernandez. today, airport police are wearing black bands in his honor, and they will wear them until he is laid to rest. dan simon is live in los angeles. dan, we know most of terminal 3 still closed. what is the latest on the investigation? >> reporter: well, regarding terminal 3, we don't know when it's going to reopen. of course, you have a lot of passengers who want to go into the terminal and retrieve their belongs. when this happened be people dropped everything, hit the exits and left their stuff. they're eager to go retrieve it. and the fbi says they're still investigating at this point terminal 3 is off-limits to the public. in terms of the investigation, fredricka, we know this is somebody, according to sources, who espoused anti-government views. this is somebody who obviously had anger directed at tsa agents. in terms of the chronology, fredricka, it's understood what happened. he came into the terminal, 9:20 a.m. yesterday, encountered two tsa agents shot, both of them -- one of them killed, 39-year-old girardeau hernandez, he

hernandez. investigators said ciancia proceeded up an escalator, but when hernandez appeared to move, he returned to shoot him again. police say he shoots tony grigsby and brian ludmer. once he was past security, police say he made his way down the long corridor. according to some reports, he went up to witnesses and said tsa. they shook their heads no and he kept going. ciancia was seen shooting several times. we now know ciancia lived in los angeles for over a year. law enforcement sources tell nbc news he legally purchased two gun from a target range not far from his home. in a moment, ciancia lashes out at the tsa saying his constitutional rights were violated and a mention of nwo which warns of a totalitarian one-world government. he sent a message to his family back in new jersey just before the rampage. his father was so worried, he asked to call l.a. authorities. >> he called my cell phone back. he said to me that i can't believe what i'm saying on tv. is this true? is this my son involved in the shooting? my reply to him was i heard the same thing, paul. i have not confirmed any
